Salvation & Baptism

[ Becoming a follower of Jesus ]

This Is Where It Starts

God isn't waiting for you to clean yourself up first. He loves you exactly as you are right now, there's nothing you could do to make Him love you more, and nothing you've done that makes Him love you less. Because of that love, He sent His Son, Jesus, to take the penalty for everything that separates us from Him. Jesus died, and He didn't stay dead, He rose again, and that's the whole ballgame. That's the victory we're invited into.

"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)

You can't Earn It... you can only receive it

Salvation isn't a reward for good behavior, it's a gift. You receive it by putting your trust in what Jesus already did on the cross and deciding to actually live like it's true. If you've been carrying this on your own, or keeping God at arm's length, you can settle this right now, wherever you're reading this.

Three honest steps

  • Admit it. You need a Savior. Not a self-improvement plan, a rescue. Ask God to forgive you.
  • Believe it. Jesus died for you and rose again, that's not a metaphor, it's the whole reason any of this works.
  • Confess it. Make Jesus the actual Lord of your life, not just a topic you're open-minded about. This is a beginning, not a finish line. Growing in this is the rest of your life, and you won't be doing it alone.

Pray This, In Your Own Words

There's nothing magic about this exact wording. Make it yours. What matters is that you mean it.

Heavenly Father, I come to you knowing I need a Savior. I believe Jesus is Your Son, and that He died and rose again so I could be forgiven and given new life. Today, I'm making Jesus the Lord of my life. I receive this new life. This is my new beginning. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Welcome to the Family oF God

This isn't "better version of the old you." It's new. Whatever's had a grip on you: shame, a cycle you can't seem to break, a past you can't outrun. There's real freedom in Jesus, not just a nicer feeling about the same old thing. You're not walking through any of this alone anymore.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Baptism: Say It Out Loud

Baptism doesn't save you. That already happened the moment you put your faith in Jesus. What baptism does is make it public. It's you saying, out loud and in front of people, "I'm following Jesus, and I'm not quiet about it." It pictures what actually happened inside you: the old life going under, the new life coming up. We throw a real party about it, because it's a genuinely big deal.

"And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name." (Acts 22:16)

Should I Actually Get Baptized?

Short answer: yes, if you haven't. Jesus got baptized before He started His ministry, not because He needed it, but because He was setting the example (Matthew 3:16). If you're following Him, this is one of the ways you follow His lead (Matthew 28:19). It also pictures the gospel itself: Jesus died, was buried, and rose again, and baptism is you acting that out, leaving the old life in the water and coming up into the new one (Romans 6:4).
